Why are the manatees eating lettuce?
Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is home to several captive manatees that are unable to survive in the wild on their own. These manatees are cared for and fed several varieties of lettuce by park rangers four times daily. While you may see captive manatees being fed on the webcam, it is illegal to feed anything to a wild manatee.
Is there a schedule for manatee feeding?
The manatees are fed four times daily: around 7:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. These times may vary slightly depending on programming, weather and routine care.
Why are there people in the spring?
Sometimes viewers may see people in the spring doing activities such as swimming, snorkeling or scuba diving. Persons doing these activities in the springs are either park rangers or authorized individuals from partner agencies. The Homosassa Spring is closed for recreational use.
