George Peters
Volunteer diver, George Peters, has served his community his entire life. Growing up in Laurelton, New York, George was active as a volunteer firefighter, as well as a public safety rescue and recovery diver. Upon retiring and moving to Florida, George wanted to continue serving doing what he loved most, diving.
George has been coming to Weeki Wachee Springs State Park since he was a child in the early 60s. He never thought he would settle near the park which has meant so much to him for decades. George’s tasks include cleaning the theater windows, removing the invasive algae (Lyngbya majuscule) from the main-spring and assists with any underwater maintenance issues which may arise.
“For me, it’s a privilege to be a volunteer diver here. There is never a day that goes by that the mermaids or staff would thanks us for the things that we do. It is really nice to be appreciated,” said George.
