Sometimes it takes a village, and Florida Caverns State Park is grateful for its village of supporters, the Friends of Florida Caverns State Park.
The Friends of Florida Caverns State Park, a citizen support organization (CSO) founded in 2003, is composed of volunteers who dedicate time and experience to assist the staff and visitors of the Florida Caverns State Park. Several of the charter members are still active and involved in the group’s activities.
The organization serves park visitors by maintaining a coin-operated washer and dryer for campers and maintaining a penny press in the museum. The group purchased a golf cart park for volunteers to use, making their work easier.
The CSO also assists the park with annual events including Astronomy in the Park, Earth Day and Caverns Cultural Celebration. The friends group is a part of the park’s “going green” movement.
Board members meet monthly to plan and coordinate efforts. The group holds quarterly meetings for community outreach and education.
Become active in your community and support the natural gems of Marianna! This is the perfect opportunity to interact with others who share your interest and learn all about the friends of the Florida Caverns: who we are, what we do and how you can become involved!
The Friends of Florida Caverns State Park assists staff members in raising public awareness of the value of protecting and celebrating the park’s significant biological, geologic, cultural features and recreational opportunities. It was these features that resulted in the designation of Florida Caverns as Florida’s seventh state park more than 60 years ago.
